New Dead Can Dance Album

Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry got together to produce the first Dead Can Dance album; Anastasis. The name of the album means resurrection in Greek, a suitable title as it is their first album in 16 years!.. The 8-track album was launched yesterday and it is now available to order.

The sound of the album is no different really than what they used to do. But I guess that's a good thing, as it is that sound that Dead Can Dance fans would expect. There is a sense of melancholia and mysticism throughout with Middle Eastern and Gaelic influences. It brings listeners a feeling of nostalgia and at the same time prepares them for something bigger. And what beautiful artwork?! It's a piece of art!

Dead Can Dance have announced a tour in North America to present the album; I really do hope they come to Europe as well! I guess we'll have to wait and see!

The full album can be streamed here.

The radio edit version (not featured in the album) of Amnesia, can be downloaded here for free.

Nicolas Jaar new EP

This is the new, available as a free download and soon as a limited edition vinyl, 2 track EP from 21 year old Nicolas Jaar. I find both tracks really atmospheric, awakening nostalgic feelings inside me. These spasmodic noises make me feel like I am part of a journey. The first track is slightly more to my liking, though the second one has some really nice melodies.

Kelpe free tracks

Yesterday I was listaning to Kelpe's podcast on Sonotown, short and sweet! Quite nice, easy listening podcast. And was then checking him out on Soundcloud and I noticed he's got a couple of free tracks up for grabs!

He's giving away this...

And this! A 24min mix of Kelpe's back catalogue that Buddy Peace put together. Really really like this!

Jon Frost free EP

I recently came across Jon Frost, a 27 year old singer and producer from Milwakee. I thought he seemed quite interesting, I went on his website, downloaded for free his EP and had a listen. I have to admit I then deleted it... I guess it was good for what it was, but a bit too pop for me; I just have too much music in my computer, I cannot keep things I'll never listen to again.

Q-tip remix free download

Here is a a Q-tip remix from Sai Love, it's a couple of years old, but only made available to download 4 months ago. Really like the track, perfect to listen on your ipod walking around on a Saturday morning! Nothing mindblowing, but worth having a look around his stuff on Soundcloud, definitely don't like the latest remix he's done, but the rest of it has something..

Free download from Xhin

Xhin is soon to release his new LP, Sword, on Stroboscopic Artefacts. Here's one of the tracks, This Is What You Drew While You Were Asleep, as a taster of what the album may sound like... It's really atmosheric, almost magical, very interesting to hear this from him... I like it!

And here you can download for free his 2004 debut album Supersonicstate, a bit more to my taste!

Amon Tobin Isam AV show

I've been watching this video of Amon Tobin's Isam, AV show. I missed the last time he played I think back in July or August, but I'll definitely try to make the next one on 23rd November at The Forum. Super cool visuals!

By the way, you can get a free download of Amon Tobin's Surge Two Fingers Mix; all you need to do is visit his website and type in your email!

Nick Craddock mix

Listening to this mix that Nick Craddock; a London based techno/house DJ, prepared to put us in the mood for the next Plex party at Corsica Studios on July 2, where he will be playing. Deep and melodic summer sound!

Death Grips

I recently discovered Death Grips; a pretty hard hip hop / rap project. It's quite brutal and old school, not necesserily what I personally think is needed in the music scene at the moment, but there is definitely still an audience for this kind of stuff; and I include myself in this audience... I wouldn't necesserily play it first thing in the morning, although it was the first thing I played this morning quite loud while writing this blog. Not sure if my neighbours appreciated, but they should be at work anyway! I've been trying to find out more about the project, but there doesn't seem to be a lot out there, except Zach Hill's name that seems to be popping up a lot. Hill; an American drummer, is known to play noise, rock, experimental. I think Death Grips is his latest (or one of his latest) projects.

You can download the Exmilitary Mixtape and two tracks; Full Moon (Death Classic) and Face Melter (How to do impossible things).

Prefuse73 & Zola Jesus mix 1

The Misanthrope Meditation; a 40min long psychedelic mix, is the result of a collaboration between Prefuse73 and Zola Jesus. This is the first in a series to come. I thought it was a strange collaboration when I first heard of it, but actually it really works! Looking forward to the next mixes!

Animal Collective and Keep

Teaser video of the new collaborative project of Animal Collective and Keep; a Los Angeles based ethical shoes company. The collection; launched on March 26th, is in support of the Socorro Island Conservation Fund. Each member of Animal Collective designed a pair of shoes and produced a solo track to go on a limited number 4-track tape available with shoe orders. The tracks can also be downloaded even though it would be great to have the original tape! Deakin's track is doing it more for me than the others, althought I think they are all quite good and more or less what you would expect from each of them.

Shackleton and Vengeance Tenfold's Sonic Journey

'Sonic Journeys is a new collection of aural landscapes that connect creator, listener and music with the world around us.'

Shakleton and spoken word artist Vengeance Tenfold were commissioned by SoundUK to create musical representations of two sections of train lines in Devon. The two tracks are available to download for free along with a map which shows the journey Shackleton and Vengeance were inspired by. Listeners are encouraged to travel on these lines, put their headphones on and follow the journey themselves.

For me there is no question that Shackleton is a genius. His music is as always of high quality and depth with these oriental influences throughout and Vengeance's words fit in just perfectly! Personally, I like more the North Devon line track, I love the way Vengeance reapeats himself both at the beginning and the end. You kind of get lost in the track. Those two should definitely collaborate more often.

Peter Van Hoesen!

Lately I've been listening a lot to Peter Van Hoesen. There is nothing I've heard from him that I haven't liked. Would be so great to see him play live! Shame it doesn't seem like he's coming to London any time soon. Although I could always go see him play somewhere else... For now (and the next 4 hours) I guess this will have to do!

Scientist's Dubstep Into Outer Space

On November 18th at Fabric, dub producer Scientist launched Dubstep Into Outer Space on Tectonic. I got there late and missed Scientist's live performace and Pinch; for once getting there late wasn't my fault and was really gutted... Anyway, got to see Mala, who was amazing as always and Loefah, who was pretty disappointing. At the beginning I wondered: Is this really Loefah playing? I looked again, and yes it was really him. It sounded nothing like the good old Loefah... No idea what he was doing... I haven't seen him play since, but I sure hope that was a one off...

So back to the album! It consists of 12 dubstep tracks that Scientist has remixed and has given them his dub touch! The original tracks were previously unreleased tracks from other dubstep DJs and producers such as Kode9, Mala, Guido and Shackleton.

Two of the tracks are available to download for free; King Midas Sound's U Dub Part 1 and Guido's Korg Back Dub.

Prefuse73 new release & free download

Prefuse73 is releasing his new LP The Only She Chapters on Warp on April 25th/26th. The 18 track LP features a number of different female vocalists, who all add to his unique sound. Apparently, the whole LP has a female element from the vocalists he's using to the artwork of the cover...

Prefuse 73 'The Only She Chapters' Album Sampler by Warp Records

Also on offer as a free download is the 5th track of the LP, featuring Shara Worden!

From what I've heard, it all sounds like his usual atmospheric stuff, so nothing new really, but I'm sure it will be really good and I can't wait to get my hands on it!

Kode9 new release & free download

On April 18th Kode9 teams up with The Spaceape to release a new album on Hyperdub. Looking forward to listening to that, apparently Flying Lotus appears on one track...

Until then... you can download the new Kode9 essential mix and this new dub version of Time Patrol, the original version of which first appeared on 5 Years of Hyperdub.
